Greatest Official Olympic Songs/Themes

Attention!!!

The Olympics is the largest and greatest international sporting event with almost all the nations of the world coming together forgetting their petty differences and conflicts with each other. Rio 2016 kicks off today as tens of thousands of athletes compete in over 300 events in 28 sports. To coincide with the opening ceremony, Katy Perry releases the video for her newest single Rise which serves as the official English theme for the Games this year. Music has always played a significant role in the opening and closing ceremonies of this global sporting phenomenon, as host nations highlight their folk music and mainstream artists release inspirational anthems while the International Olympic Committee handpick official songs for the Games out of several nominees.

Just like the official emblems and mascots which changes each time, there are official songs also for each Olympics. Some songs have gone on to become chart toppers while others have received numerous accolades including Grammys. Whitney Houston's One Moment In Time takes the crown as the most successful Olympic theme worldwide, followed by Vangelis' Chariots Of Fire, which oozes motivation from the first chord. Composer John Williams and vocal powerhouse Sarah Brightman are the only one with double entries. There are also two songs each from the 1984 Winter Olympics, 1988 Summer Olympics, 1996 Summer Olympics and 2006 Winter Olympics.

This list does not include the Olympic Hymn, the chorul cantata composed by Spyridon Samaras and lyrics by Greek poet Kostis Palamas as after its inception at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, it became part and parcel of the Games and was declared as the official Olympic Anthem by the International Olympic Committee in 1958 at the 54th Session of the IOC in Tokyo, Japan. Since 1960, it has been played at each Olympic Games: during the opening ceremony when the Olympic flag is hoisted, and during the closing ceremony when the Olympic flag is lowered, adjusted by the hosting nations to suit there cultural compositions. Therefore, this is now part of the Olympics and does not vary each year. The following are the 18 best official Olympic songs arranged according to their chart performance and accolades received.
  1. Whitney Houston – One moment in time (1988 Summer Olympics – Seoul, South Korea)

As we come to the end of the season of Lent and approach Easter Sunday let's not forget that it is the most important day for Christianity. On Good Friday we commemorate how our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Moreover, let's not forget that God sent his only Son to show us our salvation. And on the third day he rose again from the dead and now sits on the right hand of the Father. So this Easter let's make it a point to thank God for all that he has bestowed on us. What better way to praise him than singing songs to praise His name. ENRIQUE IGLESIAS ~ King of Latin Pop ~

Attention!!!

All Sri Lankan Latin Pop fans are waiting excitedly for the reigning king to take the stage this December. So it is high time that I do a review of his songs before his arrival. Enrique Iglesias is the most popular best selling artist to perform in Sri Lanka. Although artists such as Bryan Adams, UB40, Sean Paul and Olivia Newton-John have all performed here, none of them trump Iglesias in terms of success. Iglesias has been in the music scene for almost two decades and still going strong. To get down to the nitty-gritty details, Iglesias has released ten studio albums, five compilation albums, forty-six singles, and forty-one music videos. He is one of the best live performers and also one of the most influential artists at present in the world.
Enrique
Iglesias began his career in Spanish and released three Spanish studio albums - Enrique Iglesias, Vivir and Cosas Del Amor - with immense success in the Latin countries. However, it was Enrique his debut English studio album which launched his international career. It produced the global smash hits Bailamos and Be With You as well as hits such as Rhythm Divine and Could I Have This Kiss Forever a collaboration with Whitney Houston. This album was more or less heavily Latin Pop based with the beat, style and rhythm all corresponding to the genre.
Escape
Then we have his second English studio album Escape which charted within the top five in most countries, peaking in UK, Canada and Australia while reaching No.2 on the US Billboard 200. Through this Iglesias managed to appeal to a wider audience by inculcating more pop elements. It produced the mega hits Hero and Escape as well as minor hits such as Don't Turn Off The Lights and Love To See You Cry.

Mixing it up, Iglesias next released another Spanish album - Quizás, which won him a Latin Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Album. It produced the Latin hits Mentiroso, Quizás and Para Qué La Vida all of which topped the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks Chart.
7
Insomniac

Then we see Iglesias' descent in terms of appealing to the mainstream as he failed to produce extremely successful hits from his next two albums - 7 and Insomniac. These were a mishmash of genres with Iglesias attempting to keep up with the changing times and the mainstream music taste by incorporating R&B and Synthpop into his music and failing monumentally. From 7 he released Addicted and Not In Love featuring Kelis and from Insomniac he released Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song) and Tired Of Being Sorry featuring Nadiya and although not commercially successful still fan favourites - Push featuring Lil Wayne and Somebody's Me. Then we have his compilation album - Greatest Hits, which included the new single Takin' Back My Love featuring Ciara which became a minor hit worldwide.
Greatest Hits
Euphoria

Then in 2010, Iglesias finally made his much anticipated comeback with his first bilingual album - Euphoria. For this he collaborated with RedOne, the producer who was behind the success of Lady Gaga, Kat Deluna and so many other artists who produced hit singles in the latter part of the 2000s. I Like It featuring Pitbull was the lead single off the album which was a major hit across the Americas, Europe and Asia. This was followed by Heartbeat featuring Nicole Scherzinger, Dirty Dancer featuring Usher and Lil Wayne and the dance anthem Tonight (I'm Fuckin' You) featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E. The album was heavily based in Electropop and Dancepop incorporating elements of House. The contrast between the English and Latin singles are quite clear and we see that Iglesias has finally found his niche.
Sex and Love
With his next album Sex and Love which is also bilingual, Iglesias proved that he is quite capable of evolving as well as maintaining his Latin roots. The first single off the album released in 2012, Finally Found You featuring Sammy Adams was a minor hit and this was followed by Turn The Night Up, Heart Attack and I'm A Freak featuring Pitbull which were all minor hits. In this album it was evident that Iglesias had stressed more quality on his Latin tracks and with his next single Bailando featuring Sean Paul, Descemer Bueno and Gente de Zona he proved that he is in fact the King of Latin Pop. Bailando reigned for a record breaking 41 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks Chart. It's video went viral and became one of the most watched videos of the year. More recently Iglesias collaborated with Nicky Jam on the hit El Perdon which was also a major Latin Hit.

Some of his other good songs in no particular order include:
  • Ring my bells
  • You're my #1
  • Dev - Naked (featured)
  • No me degas que no (ft.Wisin & Yandel)
  • Pitbull - Come n' go (featured)
  • I like how it feels (ft.Pitbull & The WAV.s)
  • Beautiful (ft. Kylie Minogue)
  • I have always loved you
  • El Perdedor (ft.Marco Antonio Solis)
Iglesias has sold over 137 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling Latin artists ever. Iglesias has scored over 150 number-one hits across all of the Billboard charts and he has had five Billboard Hot 100 top five singles, including two number-ones, and holds the record for producing 26 number-one Spanish-language singles on the Billboard 's Hot Latin Tracks. He also holds the record for most number-one hits and the longest running number-one hit on that chart. Iglesias also has 13 number-ones on Billboard's Dance charts, more than any other male artist. He is also the best selling Latin artist in the UK and the best selling international artist in India. He has won about 200 awards from various ceremony including 23 Billboard Music Awards (with 9 times nomination) and 36 Billboard Latin Music Awards (with 45 times nomination), as well as 7 American Music Awards (with 6 times nomination), 1 Grammys (with 3 times nomination), 5 Latin Grammys (with 4 times nomination), 10 World Music Awards (with 2 times nomination) and 6 MTV awards.

And so now we wait for Iglesias to return to the studio and perform his magic and deliver that perfect mix of Latin Pop modernized with EDM, Electropop and Hip-Hop to suit our dance floors. All hail the king!!!

Who Owned It: 25 Cover Songs Better Than The Original

Attention!!!

There comes a time in all our lives when our jaws drop when we realize that a song that we really like is merely a cover. However, does it really matter that we like the cover better than the original. What if the cover is better than the original? This list is about those artists who have done a much better job than the original artist or band and how they made it their own. Almost all the songs on the list are identified with the covering artist and most of these happen to be their signature songs.

This list is carefully compiled after considering whether we actually know the original artists. You will find them in the brackets next to the song title. Whitney Houston's global smash hit I Will Always Love You from the soundtrack of The Bodyguard is numero uno as she definitely owned the song originally sung by Dolly Parton and even covered thereafter by Kenny Rogers. Songs like Santana's Black Magic Woman, Gloria Estefan's Turn the Beat Around, Bananarama's Venus and particularly Aretha Franklin's Respect are their signature songs.

It is fundamental to realize that this list is not about the best covers of all time, as there is a separate list in relation to that, and that this is about how most of us think that these 25 songs are covered by the artists in front and not the ones in brackets. So close your mouth as you read this list as I guarantee your jaw will drop…
  1. Whitney Houston – I will always love you (Dolly Parton)
  2. Aretha Franklin – Respect (Otis Redding)
  3. The Righteous Brothers – Unchained melody (Todd Duncan)
  4. Willie Nelson – Always on my mind (Gwen McCrae)
  5. Celine Dion – The power of love (Jennifer Heart)
  6. Janis Joplin – Me and Bobby McGee (Roger Miller)
  7. Sinead O’ Connor – Nothing compares 2 u (Prince)
  8. Santana – Black magic woman (Fleetwood Mac)
  9. UB40 – Red red wine (Neil Diamond)
  10. Soft Cell – Tainted love (Gloria Jones)
  11. Ike and Tina Turner – Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

10 Greatest Contributions of the 90s to Music

Attention!!!

Well we all know that the 90s were definitely the best decade for music (well at least I do). Although I am a fan of the 60s, 70s and the 2000s, nothing can beat the 90s with its plethora of genres branching into further sub-genres and laying the foundation for the future of coming eras. 60s had its Beatles and Elvis etc. 70s had the peak of Disco and the 80s, well there was nothing special about that decade. The 2000s introduced Electro pop, Romanian pop, K-Pop and several genres of rock, hip-hop and house music to the industry. However, the 90s was a memorable decade due to most of its achievements, accomplishments and contributions to the industry.

1.     Influx of Boy Bands and Girl Groups
The 90s witnessed the entrance of a host of boy bands and girl groups in mainstream pop such as the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, 98 Degrees, 911, Destiny’s Child, TLC, Eternal, All Saints, B*Witched, Cleopatra, Hanson, 3T, Boys II Men, Five, Westlife, New Kids on the Block, Take That, Boyzone, No Mercy, Damage, The Moffats, BBMak, SWV, Wilson Phillips etc.

2.     90s Alternative Rock
Alternative rock music emerged and took over as the most popular genre of rock during the decade. This genre’s distinction from mainstream rock is expressed primarily in a distorted guitar sound, subversive and/or transgressive lyrics and generally a nonchalant, defiant attitude. Legendary bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Creed, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Goo Goo Dolls, Alice in Chains, Third Eye Blind, Green Day, 3 Doors Down, Counting Crows, Hootie and the Blowfish, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, No Doubt etc. had their roots in the 90s.

3.     90s Eurodance
Although it emerged in the latter part of the 80s, eurodance established itself as a clear genre in the 90s. It combines elements of disco, techno and electro music and a chorus rich in melodic vocals and the verses mostly being rapped. Ace of Base, La Bouche, 2 Unlimited, ATC, Culture Beat, Real McCoy, Haddaway, Whigfield, Snap!, Fun Factory, Twenty 4 Seven, Vengaboys, DJ Bobo, Dr.Alban, Cappella, Captain Hollywood Project, Corona, Le Click, Alexia, Centory, Amber, Rozalla, Aqua, Eiffel 65, Mr.President etc. are some who became extremely popular during the decade.

4.     Entrance of Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez
The decade saw the entrance of various artists and bands to the music industry but the entrance of Britney, Enrique, Martin and Lopez was definitely a highlight as the foursome with their hits Baby One More Time, Bailamos, Maria, Genie in a Bottle, I Need to Know and If You Had My Love clearly made an impression worldwide as they have now gone onto become six of the biggest selling artists of all time.

5.     Whitney Houston, Elton John, Janet Jackson and Santana reach their peak
While Whitney, Elton, Janet and Santana were not new names to the music scene in the 90s, the biggest hits of their careers were during the decade. Whitney’s cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You became a global sensation. Elton John’s second rendition of Candle in the Wind sung for late Princess Diana is the biggest selling single of the 90s. Janet’s That’s The Way Love Goes and Santana’s Smooth reached the top in almost all the countries they charted.

6.     Make Way for Vocal Heavyweights
The decade undeniably recognized talent and was rich with artists with brilliant vocals and the 90s witnessed the start of singers such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman Michael Bolton, R.Kelly, Seal etc.

7.     Oh! Those Sappy Country Love Songs
While there can be several types of love songs, there are certain slow country types which are extremely sappy and due to their extremely romantic nature are chosen for weddings. The decade witnessed the floodgates being swung open by the likes of Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, LeAnn Rimes, Lonestar, Kenny Chesney and Martina McBride and their hits You’re Still The One, Breathe, It’s Your Love, How Do I Live, Amazed, You Had Me From Hello and I Love You.

8.     Mixed Pop Bands
While the boy bands and the girl groups were flourishing during the decade we can see that there were bands composed of a mixture of teenage girls and boys sprouting like mushrooms all over the world all based in mainstream pop like Steps, Solid HarmoniE, S Club 7, The Corrs, Ace of Base, ATC, No Doubt, Vengaboys, A*Teens etc.

9.     Ladies enter Rap & Hip-Hop
Whilst hip-hop and rap continued to gain mainstream success in the 90s female artists and bands entered the genre, which was heavily dominated by men and managed to gain significant commercial success. Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj can thank Missy Elliot, Salt-N-Pepa, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown etc. for their efforts and attempts in establishing a feminine presence in the genre.

10. The Macarena
This is the Gangnam Style of the 90s and I believe if social media was as popular as it is now, the quirky dance track Macarena by Los Del Rio with its unique dance moves would have achieved even more commercial success and influence at the time. It is considered as the number one dance song of all time by Billboard and is ranked at No.7 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100.

Best Movie Songs of All Time

Attention!!!

Almost everyone loves watching movies, but there a lot of factors come into play for a movie to be a good one. Casting, acting, directing and more importantly for us music freaks a good soundtrack play an important role in making a good movie a great one. However, not all great films have great soundtracks, but some do, and these are more or less love stories or at least extremely inspirational ones.  Bryan Adams takes the crown for his Everything I Do in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, since it broke records in the United Kingdom when it was initially released and was number one in almost all the countries it charted, not to mention that it is one of the best selling singles and Bryan Adams' biggest hit of all time. At close second is Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You for the film The Bodyguard. It was a hard choice as to who should take the crown but Bryan Adams takes the peak since his song is original. Surprisingly, Kevin Costner stars in both these films.

The Bee Gees have three entries in the top 30 itself for their three hits in Saturday Night Fever. Grease and Pretty Woman have two entries each as movies.
