Best Christmas Hits of this Decade

Attention!!!

Every year this blog delivers a brand new compilation to add to your Christmas playlist. This year we explore the latest Christmas songs that have joined the fray to brighten our yuletide spirit. We are not referring to modern Christmas classics such as Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You and Wham!’s Last Christmas, but those originals songs that have entered seasonal airplay only this decade.

There are artists such as Michael Bublé and Sia who always deliver a festive jingle or two to lighten up our Christmas gatherings. Producing a Christmas album is an arduous task as reception by fans and critics can be polarizing. Due to this, only a few bold musicians actually go down this onerous path, as most take the easy way out with a single. This playlist was such a pleasure to compile as I found out some real gems to be added to your usual Christmas collection.

Coldplay’s Christmas Lights takes the top spot as the slow ballad delivers a very inspirational message for the season. This is followed by Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s You Make It Feel Like Christmas and Sia’s Santa’s Coming for Us which are both equally upbeat and cheerful. In terms of entries Sia leads  with 5 followed by Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Aloe Blacc, John Legend, Ariana Grande and Gwen Stefani each with 2 entries. Xposition - December, 2017

Attention!!!

While the awards season officially came to a close we had other accolades to be given. These were the year-end coronations. Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You was a no-shocker there as it crowned almost all the major year-end charts worldwide from US and UK to Canada and Australia. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber’s Despacito was a close second as it was released later in the year as a Spanglish remix. In the US, it was a clearly male dominated chart with Halsey being the lone female within the top 10, even that only as a featured role in The Chainsmokers’ Closer. In the UK too it was not too different as there were only two females featured in the top 10: Zara Larsson featured on Clean Bandit’s Symphony and Raye featured on Jax Jones’ You Don’t Know Me. The top 10 for the major markets are as follows:

Although the BRIT Awards 2018 are to be held in February, as per the norm the winner of the BRITs Critics Choice was announced. Beating competition from Mabel and Stefflon Don, Jorja Smith was announced as the winner of the coveted award. She follows in the footsteps of Adele, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding and most recently Rag ‘n’ Bone Man who proved he indeed has what it takes to be a superstar.

In reality TV news, the X Factor had its grand finale in December where Rak-Su emerged victorious over Grace Davies after an intense last battle. Rak-Su won with their own original song Dimelo which features Wyclef Jean and Naughty Boy. Another significance of this victory is that they are only the second group to have won the show after Little Mix and the only boy band to win it. Mentored by Simon Cowell, the foursome managed to win the audience and was a much easier win being the clear favorites unlike the year before.

It was also revealed at the end of the month that The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Bee Gees founder member Barry Gibb had been awarded knighthoods in the Queen’s New Year Honours. Other honorees include grime star Wiley, real name Richard Cowie, who is awarded an MBE for his services to music.

On the other side of the world, the lead singer of K-Pop band SHINee Kim Jong-hyun was found unconscious at his home and dead upon admission to hospital at the age of 27. His death is considered to be ruled as an apparent suicide.

In the US, Post Malone ft. 21 Savage’s Rockstar continued its reign till the third week until Ed Sheeran’s Perfect took the crown fueled by a duet version with Beyonce and continued at the top for the rest of the month. During the month Migos, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B entered the top 10 with MotorSport and Mariah Carey entered the top 10 with her Christmas classic All I Want For Christmas Is You, which achieved its chart peak 23 years since it was originally released.

In the UK, Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug’s Havana began the month at the top but was dethroned again by Ed Sheeran’s Perfect. Perfect remained at the top throughout even grabbing the coveted Christmas No.1. During the month Clean Bandit ft. Julia Michaels' I Miss You, MK’s 17 and Eminem ft. Ed Sheeran’s River all entered the top 10.

Other songs which became popular during the month were:

1.       NF – Let you down
2.       Dua Lipa – IDGAF
3.       Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran & Future – End game
4.       Inna – Nirvana
5.       Camila Cabello – Never be the same
6.       Halsey & G-Eazy – Him & I
7.       Jason Derulo ft. French Montana – Tip toe

Best of Modern Mainstream Christian/Gospel Songs

Attention!!!

As we come to the end of the season of Lent and approach Easter Sunday let's not forget that it is the most important day for Christianity. On Good Friday we commemorate how our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Moreover, let's not forget that God sent his only Son to show us our salvation. And on the third day he rose again from the dead and now sits on the right hand of the Father. So this Easter let's make it a point to thank God for all that he has bestowed on us. What better way to praise him than singing songs to praise His name. This list is not about the hymns or songs of praise and worship but those songs by famous artists which entered the mainstream recently.

Creed's With Arms Wide Open takes the top spot followed by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey's duet When You Believe from the original soundtrack of The Prince of Egypt. Best Dance Hits of the 90s

Attention!!!

If you were born in the 80s, you know almost all these songs by heart. 90s dance music is a genre in itself as theme parties are still held around the globe to accommodate the music buds of us 'twentinagers', who grew up in the 90s. It was during the 90s that pop music once more gained the forefront of the mainstream music industry and the genre shifted more or less to the fast paced european beats with a heavy influence of disco. Eurodance shaped the first half of the decade while the various  boy bands and the girl groups shaped the end of the decade and laid the foundation for the 2000s dance music based solely or mostly on dance pop and europop.

Line/step dancing was also a trend during the 90s and it was the global one-hit wonder Macarena by Los Del Rio that really infiltrated almost all parties after its release. The song ranks at No.7 on the Billboard's All Time Top 100 and also Billboard's No.1 Dance Song of All Time. The song was released in 1992 but it was the English remix by the Bayside Boys which made it a worldwide hit. Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Steps, NSync and BWitched were some of the all boy or girl bands which released dance hits while Real McCoy, Snap!, Haddaway, Mr. President and T-Spoon are some of the eurodance artists which have entries in this list.

Another interesting fact to notice is that it was at the very end of the decade that some of the best selling artists of our time, particularly the 2000s became popular such as Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera and Marc Anthony who all initially started out with their own dance hits. Michael Jackson's best hits may have been in the past but he still released some awesome dance singles in the 90s and the King of Pop leads with 5 entries in the list alongside Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls who also have 5 entries each. Best Songs with the Same Name/Title

Attention!!!

You know that annoying moment when you tell a friend that you like a particular song and they ask you about several different hits before the right one. For instance if I say I really like that song Hero and your friend asks you whether its Mariah's, Enrique's or Skillet's and you say no to all three and say it's Chad Kroeger's one. Like this there are many songs out there with the same name which confuse us since most of them are equally good (or equally bad). The title of most of these songs are one words like Angel, Shine, Hero etc. or particular phrases such as "The power of love", "I'll be there for you", "It's my life" etc. Despite the same name most of them have become hits and have won accolades. I have placed Angel at the top since there were numerous entries out of which I have picked only the best. I have limited the maximum entries to six and the minimum is three. The best performing hit is underlined. So enjoy listening to these hits and confusing your friends.
