2017 Recap: A Year in Music

Attention!!!

Ciao Adios 2017! We were all in love with the shape of 2017 as it gave us some of the best music the industry had to offer. The greatest moments in music were overshadowed by the horrific tragedies which was clearly a sign of the times. But the world moves on another day, another drama and more music. We have a million reasons to love the year but that doesn’t mean we don’t have issues with it, cause you’ve got them too. While we said we won’t let go of 2017, we had to bid farewell. I don't have new rules, so similar to 2016 I will strip 2017 down under seven segments: genres, albums, singles, milestones, shockers, talent and obituaries, and it goes something just like this: 

1. Genres
The most conspicuous changes in some of the mainstream genres included:

• Latin music resurfaced with force in the form of Spanglish remixes and dominated the charts  throughout the year.
• Mainstream Pop gradually reverted to its original form during the year after facing a tropical take over the year before.
• Hip Hop and Rap were forces to be reckoned with new artists introducing their own flavours.
• Dancepop and Electropop were reignited as they seeped through several EDM as well as Pop albums
• Rock and Country once more took a backseat, with the genres becoming almost irrelevant on the charts.  

2. Albums

Some of the most awaited albums were released in 2017:

• Shania Twain – Now (5th studio album – first album in 15 years)
• Fergie – Double Dutchess (2nd studio album – first album in 11 years)
• Steps – Tears on the Dancefloor (5th studio album – first proper album in 17 years)
• Linkin Park – One More Light (7th studio album – Bennington's final album)
• Zara Larsson – So Good (2nd studio album – first to be internationally released)
• Kesha – Rainbow (3rd studio album – first since her legal battle with Dr. Luke)
• Pink – Beautiful Trauma (7th studio album – first album in 5 years)
• Kendrick Lamar – DAMN. (4th studio album – Year-End No.1 in the US)
• Ed Sheeran – ÷ (3rd studio album – Year-End No.1 in the UK)
• Taylor Swift – Reputation (6th studio album)
• Lorde – Melodrama (2nd studio album)
• Jay-Z – 4:44 (13th studio album)
• Shakira – El Dorado (11th studio album)
• Imagine Dragons – Evolve (3rd studio album)

3. Singles

Here are some interesting trivia regarding the global hits of 2017:

• Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You topped the charts in 44 countries and was conspicuously the most successful song of 2017.
• The music video for Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do broke the record for most-watched video on YouTube within 24 hours by achieving 43.2 million views passing Adele’s Hello.
• Logic ft. Khalid & Alessia Cara’s 1-800-273-8255 is the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the US which witnessed a surge of more than 50% of calls to the hotline following its release and eventual popularity.
• Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber’s Despacito tied a 20-year old record held by Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men’s One Sweet Day for the longest-reigning number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with 16 weeks.
• Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow (Money Moves) is the second solo Hip-Hop No.1 single by a female in US chart’s history after Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) in 1998 .
• With the release of Liam Payne ft. Quavo’s Strip That Down all of One Direction’s members had made their solo debuts each one having at least one hit entering the Top 10 in the UK during the year, and Harry Styles even topping the chart with Sign of the Times. 
• With Nicki Minaj’s debut of three songs in April on the Billboard Hot 100 (No Frauds, Regrets in Your Tears and Changed It) she passed Aretha Franklin for the most total appearances among women on the chart.
• With Rihanna’s Love on the Brain entering the Hot 100 Top 10, she passed Elvis Presley becoming the artist with the third most top-ten singles in Hot 100 history behind only Madonna and The Beatles.  
• Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic All I Want for Christmas is You achieved a chart peak in the US after 23 years of its release when it peaked at No.9.
• Ed Sheeran’s Perfect grabbed the coveted Christmas No.1 in the UK with its sales being propelled due to duet versions with Beyonce and Andrea Bocelli.  

4. Milestones

Some musicians need to be given the due recognition for their achievements during the year.

• Adele became the first artist in history to win the triple crowns at the ceremony twice with Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Hello and Album of the Year for 25 at the 59th Grammy Awards a feat which she previously achieved in 2012. 
• The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Bee Gees lead vocalist Barry Gibb were knighted in the Queen’s 2017 New Year Honours
• Sir Paul McCartney, Emeli Sande and Ed Sheeran receive the prestigious MBE in the Queen’s 2017 Birthday Honours List 
• Taylor Swift wins sexual assault case against DJ David Mueller for groping her at a 2013 concert 
• Diana Ross was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 American Music Awards
• Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year was bestowed on Alejandro Sanz at the 2017 Latin Grammy Awards
• Pink received the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards 
• Robbie Williams received the Icon Award at the BRIT Awards 2017 
• Pitbull was awarded the inaugural Dick Clark Achievement Award for his contribution to Latin Music at the 2017 Latin American Music Awards 
• Jay-Z was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and became the first rapper in history to be bestowed with such an honour.
• Selena Gomez was named 2017’s Billboard Woman of the Year 
• U2 received the Global Icon Award at the 2017 MTV European Music Awards 
• Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber’s Despacito became the most watched YouTube video of all time with over 4.7 billion views.
• Lady Gaga’s performance at the 2017 Super Bowl LI Halftime Show was the second most-watched in history and is also among the most critically acclaimed of all time
• Sampha’s Process won the coveted 2017 Mercury Prize
• Afrojack played a record breaking eight sets at Tomorrowland 2017 
• Vera Lynn made history when her album, 100, charted at Number 3 in the UK, making her the first living centenarian to have a Top 10 album
• Cher was bestowed with the Icon Award at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards 
• Britney Spears honoured with the Icon Award at the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards

5. Shockers

There were amazing moments in 2017 as well as the tragic ones that made up this memorable year.

• 58 people were shot dead and around 851 were injured in a shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival during Jason Aldean’s performance, making this the second deadliest concert shootings in history.  
• Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park hangs himself soon after the release of the band’s 7th studio album 
• A suicide bomb attack after an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena resulted in 22 deaths and left 250 injured.
• Glastonbury to take a year’s break after pulling in a record peak audience of 4.1 million viewers for Ed Sheeran’s headline slot and be replaced with BBC Music’s The Biggest Weekend
• Ed Sheeran privately settles a case of copyright infringement for his single Photograph and  the similarity between Matt Cardle’s Amazing 
• Fergie takes an indefinite break from the Black Eyed Peas 
• Tony Hadley, lead singer of Spandau Ballet formally announces his departure from the band
• Russia withdraws from Eurovision as Ukraine bans their representative Yulia Samoylova  from entering the host country by virtue of having traveled directly from Russia to Crimea in 2015
• Hip-Hop trio Tulisa, Dappy and Fazer indicates a N-Dubz reunion 
• The first ever Asia-Pacific Eurovision Song Contest was announced as Eurovision Asia was formally launched with 20 countries coming together to compete in an annual grand finale.

Attention!!!

The month of October commenced with a tragedy where 58 people were shot dead and around 546 injured in a shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival. The shooting took place when headliner Jason Aldean was performing and the death toll makes this the largest mass shooting in US history passing the 49 killed in the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. The perpetrator Stephen Paddock was a former auditor and real estate businessman who was gunned down during the shooting.

In more tragic news, US musician Tom Petty passed away at the age of 66. He was found in full cardiac arrest at his Malibu home, but could not be revived at the hospital. Petty was the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was also a co-founder of the Traveling Wilburys in the late 1980s.

The BET Hip Hop Awards 2017 took place in October where Kendrick Lamar, DJ Khaled and Cardi B were all leading the nomination with 9 nods each. However, the show’s most memorable moment was when Eminem dissed President Donald Trump in a freestyle rap calling out the leader for focusing on the NFL players’ protest during the national anthem instead of Puerto Rico’s recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Maria. The big wins of the night include:

·         Best Hip Hop Video: Kendrick Lamar – Humble.

·         Best Collab: DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller – Wild thoughts

·         Lyricist of the Year: Kendrick Lamar

·         DJ of the Year: DJ Khaled

·         Single of the Year: J. White Did It – Bodak Yellow (Cardi B)

·         Album of the Year: Kendrick Lamar – Damn.

·         Best New Hip Hop Artist: Cardi B

·         Impact Track: Jay-Z – The story of O.J.

The BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards 2017 winners were also held in October with brilliant performances by Dua Lipa, James Arthur, Liam Payne, Rita Ora and Camila Cabello. Dua Lipa took the coveted Best British Single for New Rules while Ed Sheeran was honoured as the Best British Solo Artist. Among the other winners were:

·         Most Entertaining Celeb: Stormzy

·         Best International Group: The Chainsmokers

·         Best British Group: Little Mix

·         Best International Solo Artist: Ariana Grande

The big winners of the night at the 2017 Latin American Music Awards were Enrique Iglesias, Prince Royce and new boy band CNCO. There were incredible performances by Camila Cabello with her new hit Havana and Pitbull and Fifth Harmony took to the stage to perform their new collab Por Favor. Pitbull was honoured with the first ever Dick Clark Achievement Award for his contribution to the Latin music industry. Other winners of the night were:

·         Artist of the Year: Enrique Iglesias

·         Song of the Year: Prince Royce & Shakira – Déjà vu

·         Album of the Year: CNCO – Primera Cita

·      Favorite Collaboration: Enrique Iglesias ft. Descemer Bueno, Zion & Lennox – Súbeme La Radio

·         Favorite Artist-Urban: J Balvin

·         Favorite Song-Pop/Rock: CNCO – Reggaeton Lento (Bailemos)

·         Favorite Crossover Artist: Selena Gomez

Taylor Swift leads the nominations for the 2017 MTV Europe Music Awards with six nods followed by Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes. Rita Ora is to host the event this year and will be performing one or more of her latest hits. Swift who scored her first No.1 in the UK with Look What You Made Me Do is up for Best US Act, Best Artist, Best Look, Best Pop, Biggest Fans and Best Video.

Nominations for the 45^th annual American Music Awards were also released with Bruno Mars leading the nominations with 8 followed by Drake, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar and the Weeknd. Diana Ross former lead singer of The Supremes and Motown legacy with a monumental solo career after her girl band days will be bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the end of the ceremony.

It was confirmed by Justin Timberlake on his Twitter account that he will in fact be headlining the Super Bowl LII halftime show in 2018. JT will literally have big boots to fill after the critically acclaimed powerful performance of Lady Gaga at the 2017 halftime show. However, this is not the first time JT will be at the Super Bowl as he was the culprit of the infamous Nipplegate. This was when during his stint with Janet Jackson in 2004 (who headlined the show), JT accidentally ripped Janet’s outfit to expose her breast.

In the US, Cardi B opened the month at the top with her debut hit Bodak Yellow (Money Moves) which removed Taylor Swift’s Look What You Made Do from the helm. It continued its reign for 2 more weeks before being replaced by Post Malone ft. 21 Savage’s Rockstar. During the month Demi Lovato’s Sorry Not Sorry entered the top which became her highest charting single in the US peaking at No.6 and she was joined in the top 10 by Portugal. The Man’s Feel It Still, Imagine Dragons’ Thunder and J Balvin & Willy William ft. Beyonce’s Mi Gente.  

In the UK, Sam Smith’s Too Good at Goodbye’s continued its reign into the first week of October after which Post Malone dethroned Smith with his global hit Rockstar which remained at the top for the rest of the month. During the month Logic ft. Alessa Cara & Khalid’s 1-800-273-8255, Mabel ft. Kojo Funds’ Finders Keepers, Marshmello ft. Khaild’s Silence and Stefflon Don ft. French Montana’s Hurtin’ Me all entered the top 10.

The Latin Resurgence

Despacito is the newest buzz word in town for any dance party. The global phenomenon of this titanic hit has led to the mainstream resurgence of a genre that has been dormant for sometime. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee never expected their music video to go viral, neither did they expect the Justin Bieber remix of the song to become one of the best-selling singles of all time. 

Latin music has been a genre since the 1940s but it was only in the 1980s that it became quite popular with hits from Julio Iglesias, Juan Gabriel, Roberto Carlos and Celia Cruz. The early 90s saw the gradual rise and decline of Eurodance wherein certain hits were infused with Latin music. Selena's contribution to Latin music via her push for Tejano was short lived following her tragic death in 1995. 

By the mid 90s it was clear that Latin music was here to stay with the mega hit Los Del Rio's Macarena taking the world by storm with its Bayside Boys Mix. The hit which was accompanied by a step dance and a memorable music video was the biggest hit of the 90s. Post Macarena era witnessed Latin Pop becoming the ambassador for Latin music in the mainstream. Young artists such as Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Marc Anthony and Shakira entered the mainstream with monumental force in the late 90s and ruled the charts in the early 2000s. Particularly songs such as Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca, Iglesias' Bailamos and Shakira's Hips Don't Lie made a massive impact on the charts. 

After Latin Pop's gradual decline, Reggaeton took over in the mid 2000s with artists such as Daddy Yankee, Wisin & Yandel and Nina Sky. However, while their songs were a staple on the dance floor at the time, they did not make much of an impact on the charts. The last of the sub-genres of Latin music to crossover to the mainstream was Bachata where Prince Royce and Romeo Santos are making a recognizable impact. After 2010, Latin music was all but in the past, with no real presence in the charts except for the one off hit by either Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez or Shakira. 

In 2014, Iglesias made a huge comeback with Bailando which soared to the top in many charts and was a global floorfiller at parties. However, it never managed to score success in the charts that mattered - US, UK and Australia. While proving to be definitely one of the best Latin songs of all time, it was evident that the mainstream was not ready to embrace Latin music as a whole. 

All of this changed with Despacito. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's original Spanish version did not fare all that well in the English speaking countries. However, the Bieber remix proved to be more successful than the collaborators ever imagined. Justin Bieber not only contributed his vocals to the remix perfecting the Spanish lines, his association with the single alongside the fact that he is the most influential and successful artist of yesteryear not to forget the fact that he is also the most sought after artist to be featured at present made this song the Song of the Summer of 2017 and also equaled a record which was set in 1995. 

With Despacito it is clear that Latin music is enjoying more popularity than before. The first song to experience this is J Balvin and Willy William's Mi Gente. Next up we have Iglesias re-releasing his Súbeme la Radio as a Spanglish version with X Factor winner Matt Terry and Sean Paul. This was followed by Jennifer Lopez's newest single Ni Tú Ni Yo. The last to enter this party was Little Mix where they collaborated with the new Latin boy band sensation CNCO and re-released a Spanglish version of the latter's hit Reggaetón Lento. 

Others that could possibly join this fold include Pitbull, Shakira, Sean Paul, Maluma, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Wisin, Camila Cabello, Kat DeLuna and even Ricky Martin who might use this opportunity to make his long awaited comeback. All in all this resurgence could very well be a result of the mainstream swaying gradually towards a more tropical taste given the rise of Reggae Fusion as well as tropical beats entering Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap. It could also be just a fluke with the recent resurgence attributable to the Bieber Remix of Despacito. At the end of the day we will have to wait and see, whether Latin music is here to stay in the mainstream or will disappear as soon as whence it came.

My Favorite Hits of 2016

2016 was a year which definitely catered to my taste. From EDM and Reggae Fusion to Pop and Alternative Rock there were awesome hits galore. One thing is for sure the songs of 2016 were much better than 2014 and were on an equal level with 2015. Although there was only a lone floorfiller last year in the form of Sia’s Cheap Thrills there were a few mind-blowing EDM hits. Alan Walker rules this list with his global hit Faded. The slow and relaxing beats of the tune are accompanied by the uncredited soothing vocals of Iselin Solheim. At second place is Stressed Out the Alternative Rock hit for the duo Twenty One Pilots followed by Swedish newcomer Zara Larsson's Lush Life at third place. 

Genre wise EDM has numerous entries followed by Pop, Reggae and Rap. Alan Walker, Dua Lipa, Sean Paul and Zara Larsson lead the list with three entries each followed by Twenty One Pilots, Clean Bandit, Anne Marie, Zedd, Hailee Steinfeld, DNCE, Justin Bieber, Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Rihanna, Jonas Blue, Ariana Grande and Louisa Johnson all have two entries each, either as a lead or featured artist. Most Underrated Songs of 2016

Attention!!!

Underrated means undervaluing something or not giving something the recognition it deserves. In the music industry it is particularly difficult for new artists to make headway in the mainstream as they have to compete with the already established and popular artists. So when highly overrated artists spew album after album and single after single backed by their record labels the smaller and lesser known artists or the new ones find it almost impossible to gain ground in the music scene. Pop culture is such however, that sometimes even the best of songs do not necessarily get chart success. Some of these songs which do get radio airplay, counts for almost nothing compared to physical and digital sales as well as streaming.

The following songs are the inverse of overrated as I believe they should have performed much better than they did on the global charts. Dua Lipa’s Hotter Than Hell tops the list as although it was a minor hit, the song deserves much more when taking the production as a whole.  She has two songs on the list as her follow-up single also failed to make any mark on the charts although now she is a worldwide phenomenon and is one of the most sought after artists to be featured. So here are the 20 most underrated songs of 2016:

2016 is the year where tropical beats entered the dancefloor. With Reggae and Dancehall fusing with the mainstream genres of dance music such as EDM, Pop, Rap and R&B, dance music as a whole evolved. Hip-Hop was virtually non-existent during the year while Latin Pop and Progressive House took a backseat giving way to this immensely popular tropical rhythms and melodies.

Sia featuring Sean Paul’s Cheap Thrills takes the crown as it is now a floor filler at any party, but sadly this is the only floor filler that joins the elite club of songs such as Pitbull featuring Kesha’s Timber and Enrique Iglesias featuring Gente De Zona and Descemer Bueno which makes anyone want to join the dancefloor. At a close second is Kungs vs. Cookin’ On 3 Burners’ This Girl and at third place is Major Lazer featuring Nyla and Fuse ODG’s Light it up. This is Major Lazer’s second stint at a top three position as the trio’s mammoth hit collaboration with DJ Snake and MØ’s Lean On topped the list last year.

Artists that Laid the Foundation for the 2010s

The 2010s have proven to be a smorgasbord of genres as well as producing some great artists who have clearly proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the industry. The 2000s were an awesome decade where Pop and Alternative music flourished uninhibited alongside Rap, Electropop, Dancepop and Hip-Hop music. Eurodance had become virtually non-existent at that time and had paved the way for the more successful Europop and its sub-genre Romanian Pop. However, the trends of the 2000s have come and gone and now that we are 7 years into the 2010s, it is quite conspicuous that it has developed its own unique identity clearly different from any of the preceding decades. 

The decade will be known for producing tweaked and synthesized versions of the by-gone genres such as Doo-Wop and Reggae as well as giving rise to modernized genres such as Dancehall, Trap and an all-encompassing Electronic Dance Music, more popularly known as EDM. Sampling old hits is also a trend in the 2010s where only certain artists come up with their original hits and even the great Queen Bey is guilty of sampling Major Lazer’s Pon De Floor in her Run the World (Girls).

Certain artists helped lay the foundation for this decade which has now produced some of the most iconic and successful global smash hits such as Happy, Someone Like You, Uptown Funk, One Dance and Party Rock Anthem. However, there are a set of artists who initially laid the foundation for this decade and then helped mold and shape into what the decade has become. Here are the 10 artists which clearly laid that foundation:

1. Lady Gaga

Mother Monster began her run at fame in 2008 with her debut studio album, The Fame, which produced the titan hits Just Dance and Poker Face. Her second studio album, The Fame Monster, produced the global number one Bad Romance which proved that she was not just a one-album wonder. Her creativity and her unique blend of Art and Pop made her an instant celebrity. The showcasing of her bizarre originality made her extremely influential and the fact that she catered to the growing demand of Pop with significant contributions to Electropop and Dancepop makes her the most prominent pillar of this decade. 

2. Pitbull

Mr.Worldwide began his career in 2004, way before his mainstream success kicked off in 2009 with I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho). His style of rapping synced brilliantly with his up-tempo Latin and Electropop beats. He introduced into Dancepop the concept of featuring major artists in his songs, which instantly led them to the top of the charts such as Give Me Everything, International Love and Feel This Moment. He became and is the most wanted artist to be featured in Pop songs during the decade with ongoing collaborations with Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez.

3. David Guetta

Guetta is the father of mainstream House music and the only DJ to be featured on this list. He was in the House scene throughout the 2000s but it was his hit When Love Takes Over that brought him into the mainstream limelight. He is the DJ that began collaborating with the bigtime mainstream artists at the time. He targeted the trends in EDM and adapted accordingly and his albums One Love and Nothing But The Beat are evidence of this, as the former is distinctive of the House music in the latter stages of the 2000s while the latter left a monumental mark in the Progressive House scene with Titanium, Without You and She Wolf. 

4. Nicki Minaj

Roman Zolanski, the self-styled Queen of Rap first came into the scene as part of the Young Money crew singing BedRock. Her awesome talent is coupled with a robust personality. This includes different alter egos with varying rapping styles. In the early 2010s she became the most wanted female rapper to be featured (and overall second only to Rihanna). Her mainstream debut as a lead artist proved to be even more successful with Your Love, Super Bass and Starships each one reaching positions in the charts. She revolutionized female rapping and contributed immensely to Dancepop.     

5. Bruno Mars

Mars was a breath of fresh air in 2010, as his Pop music was reminiscent of the retro and classic styles of the yesteryears. He brought in elements from Disco, Doo-Wop and retro R&B popular during the 70s and 80s. With flair similar to Michael Jackson and a style similar to Boney-M, pop culture was got a revamped look. Focusing on the genre of Pop as it was back in the day, Mars ensured that his introduction of the bygone elements would be incorporated into the decade as it unfolded.   

6. Katy Perry

She started off as a rebel with I Kissed A Girl storming the charts in 2008. Her second studio album Teenage Dream spawned 5 No.1 hits – California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.). Her predominance over the global charts in the early 2010s paved the way for a heavily Pop-influenced decade. She ensured that the pure essence of Pop as it had developed up to that point with its up-tempo, upbeat and light style survived the manipulation of the genre by other artists. 

7. Tinie Tempah 

He is the Prince of Grime with his own unique style of rapping. His debut single Pass Out was an overnight No.1 hit followed by back to back hits such as Written In The Stars, Wonderman and Frisky. He is the most wanted rapper by EDM artists be it House, Progressive House or Hip House. He has the credit for bringing rapping on EDM songs into the mainstream as his collaboration with Swedish House Mafia on Miami 2 Ibiza became an international hit and proved that it is not only powerful vocals that is needed to accompany EDM.  

8. Taylor Swift

Before the reigning Princess of Pop made her strategic genre switch, she was ruling the Country music scene. Her debut studio album Taylor Swift was pure Country while her second album Fearless proved that she was ambitious and was aiming for a much bigger audience. Fearless spawned the hits Love Story and You Belong With Me while her third album Speak Now also produced hits such as Mean, Back to December and Mine. Her dominance over the Country charts encouraged and paved the way for young female musicians to inspire to break into the mainstream from whatever genre. 

9. Adele

As the Queen of Soul, she introduced Blues and Soul into mainstream Pop. She proved to the industry that depth can still remain in music while everything else is changing and that slow music still has more than a niche market in the mainstream. She achieved success with her debut studio album 19 in the latter stages of the 2000s. However, with her second album 21 made it a point that Soul is here to stay and will form part of the major genres of the decade. Her hit single Rolling In The Deep in 2010 is one of the best-selling singles of all time breaking multiple records at the time. 

10. Flo Rida

He is the King of Hip-Hop especially when it comes to dance music. His 2008 megahit Low made the relatively unknown rapper, instantly famous. His big follow up to Low was Right Round which cemented his presence in the industry. He has shown time and time again that his music is extremely versatile and that his adaptation skills are even better. At the initial stages of the 2010s he too shifted like Pitbull and featured major artists in his songs and then began venturing into Dancepop and EDM to solidify the dance music genre of the decade. 

Some may wonder why certain artists missed the top 10. The reason to exclude particular artists is due to the fact that they were extremely popular during the 2000s and were established artists from the early 2000s and more or less had defined their genres by that time. These include artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Shakira, Eminem, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Kanye West and the groups such as Maroon 5, Black Eyed Peas and OneRepublic. Then there are those who had their peak in the 2000s but are still in the industry in the 2010s such as Sean Paul, Jay Sean, Sean Kingston, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Akon.

Then there are the artists who entered the mainstream at the beginning of the decade but never made a significant impact to the genre from the inception like those listed above such as Avicii, Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Jason Derulo and Justin Bieber. Then we have artists like Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, One Direction, Fifth Harmony and Little Mix who entered the industry too late to make it to the list.

P.S. – One artist who did make a huge impact at the beginning of the decade was Kesha (formerly known as Ke$ha). However, since her legal battle with Dr. Luke she has all but disappeared from the industry and the ones on the list are those who are still in the industry. If she does sort out her issues and do make a comeback (as we all hope) then she will definitely be added on to this compilation (and most probably within the top tier).

The best years of those born in the 80s were during the 2000s when they would be in the latter ages of their teens. The 2000s may also prove to be the last vestiges of Alternative Rock and Hard Rock as the 2010s have massacred the genres to the point of no return. Eurodance was dead and in its place Europop was building itself as a genre with a significant contribution from Romanian Pop. Those artists that began their careers in the 90s such as Britney Spears, Eminem, Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias have become superstars with several dance hits and some like Shakira, Pitbull, Rihanna, Sean Paul and David Guetta have entered the mainstream with several dance hits. With his debut dance anthem Low, Flo Rida entered the hearts and minds of the party people during the 2000s and claims the top spot on this compilation. At No.2 we have Usher's Yeah in which he collaborated with veteran rappers Ludacris and Lil Jon.
