Ultimate Quarantine Playlist

It has indeed been sometime since I took some time off to create a playlist. This time, I had a lot of time on my hands, considering I had 10 long never ending days to think about it. As you might have guessed, this is because I am serving my government mandated 10 days of quarantine prison. Other than pondering where I went wrong, or how I managed to get myself positive for the dreaded Covid-19 virus, I also had time to listen to music. This stupid manmade virus (oh yeah! I have bought into the conspiracy theories) has placed the whole entertainment industry at risk. While the Americas and Europe are slowly coming out of their stringent social distancing guidelines, third world countries such as Sri Lanka can only dream about concerts or live shows for that matter.

In this backdrop, we all need a proper quarantine playlist. This playlist is for those of you who are facing an island wide lockdown or is in quarantine or self-isolation. Whatever, boredom you are facing I suggest you listen to this playlist. It has been formulated with intricate milestones of this pandemic and also the must-listen songs that you may have missed out due to these trying times.

 I.  Return of Disco

Did you know that disco made a triumphant come back? While it has always been a favorite genre of mine, popular back in the 70s, I never imagined that this was a genre that could ever fare well again on the charts, given the penchant the millennials have for genres such as Hip Hop, EDM and Dancepop. However, was I proved wrong. We have Dua Lipa to thank for. Her album, Future Nostalgia set the stage for the return of this long forgotten genre. While her entire album is infused with disco, the most successful singles are Don’t Stop Now, Levitating and Break My Heart.

Dua Lipa’s success was followed by The Weeknd, with his platinum hit Blinding Lights. Blinding Lights ended up as the Year-End number in 2020 on both sides of the Atlantic with 8 non-consecutive weeks at the top in the UK and topped the US for 4 weeks and is still in the charts, now holding the record longest charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 with 88 weeks as of this post. He followed this up with In Your Eyes and Save Your Tears both addictive duets, the latter of which also topped the US.

Kylie Minogue’s 15th album was aptly titled Disco, which paid tribute the bygone era of the 70s and also made Minogue the first female artist to have number one album in the UK in 5 consecutive decades. The 6th studio album released by 90s pop icons, Steps also included several disco tracks. Sophie Ellis-Bexter’s latest studio album, Songs from the Kitchen Disco, has a brilliant cover of Alcazar’s Crying at the Discotheque and also a 2020 edition of her 2000-hit, Groovejet.

Newcomer Doja Cat had her big breakthrough in early 2020 with a timely disco track, Say So. She has followed this up recently with Kiss Me More, featuring R&B singer SZA. Lady Gaga was a dancepop sensation in the late noughties and the early 2010s. However, certain singles off her latest album, Chromatica explores elements of disco, particularly Rain On Me and 911. Other notable disco tracks include K-Pop boy band BTS’s foray into English with their worldwide hit, Dynamite, Elton John collaborations with Years & Years where they cover Pet Shop Boys’ hit, It’s a Sin, and Dua Lipa where the duo mashup John’s past hits Sacrifice and Rocket Man; Victoria Monét’s Experience and Kygo’s reworking of Donna Summer’s 1979-hit, Hot Stuff.

 II.  Artists Redefined

Sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Because she’s dead again. Covid-19 really put everyone in isolation, whether you like it or not. When Taylor Swift went into isolation, she reinvented herself. This time Swift has entered a folk-rock era. With back-to-back multiplatinum albums, Folklore and Evermore, within a span of a mere six months, Swift proved that you only needed inspiration and lone time to produce hits. Both lead singles off the albums, Cardigan and Willow reached No.1 in the US.

While Swift became more mellow and distant from the mainstream, her pal Ed Sheeran, embraced the dark side of peer pressure. His latest hit Bad Habits, is proof that even the most idiosyncratic artist will cave for commercial success. Bad Habits is the lead single from his upcoming album “=” and is a dancepop track, most unusual for the folk pop singer. We will have to wait and see whether the entire album is a sell-out.

Former One Direction member, Harry Styles has chosen more of a mainstream pop sound for his 2nd studio album, Fine Line. His first album paid homage to the glam rock era and this redefined flavor in his new album ensured success on the charts for singles, Watermelon Sugar, Golden and Adore You.

Some artists have to redefine themselves due to circumstances beyond their control. Girl band Little Mix had to face a big obstacle in December 2020, when Jesy Nelson left the group due to mental health struggles. This was just as the group was making a chart come back after their departure from Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco Music. Their single, Sweet Melody was climbing the charts and actually reached No.1 in the UK, soon after Nelson’s departure. However, the group was determined to continue as trio. The title track off their 6th studio album, Confetti, reached the top 10 in the UK and they had their first collaboration with EDM artists David Guetta and Galantis, Heartbreak Anthem which proved to be a critical and commercial hit.

 III.   New Comers

Several new comers have left their mark on the charts and they have also proven that they are capable of producing noteworthy music. While TikTok and other social media platforms have clearly ruined the chances of good productions reaching the echelons of charts, some fortunately beat the odds and achieve this. Some of these artists are The Kid LAROI, Olivia Rodrigo, Tate McCrae and 24kGoldn. A few Australian artists also emerged during the pandemic era particularly Tones and I, Masked Wolf and Glass Animals.

Some high profile artists collaborated to form new ventures during this era. First we see DJs Martin Solveig and Jax Jones collaborate as Europa. Their hit single All Day and Night with Madison Beer preceded the pandemic, but the dance track Tequila with RAYE was released after. Silk Sonic was formed in 2021 by R&B artists Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. Their debut single Leave the Door Open was a commercial hit reaching No.1 in the US.

Eurovision faced a major setback as the 2020 edition to be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Netherlands won back in 2019 with Duncan Laurence’s Arcade. The song experienced new traction in 2020 after the release of the duet version with American artist FLETCHER. At the 2021 Eurovision, Italy won the contest with Måneskin’s rock track, Zitti e Buoni. With the victory at Eurovision, Måneskin propelled to fame with their singles Beggin’ and I Wanna Be Your Slave charting in several territories.

 IV.    Pity Party Floor-fillers

Due to constant lockdowns, curfews and social distancing guidelines, dancing with friends and family seems like a fantasy for most of us. While we wallow in our pity parties, certain artists have produced a number of hits that are worthy floor-fillers at any party. EDM legend Tiësto has resurfaced with numerous hits for his portfolio, proving that age is definitely never a barrier for those who can improvise and adapt to the times.

Jason Derulo has also made a much anticipated come back on the charts with several hits such as the global smash, Savage Love, sampled from Jawsh 685’s Siren Beat.  Ava Max has been busy during the pandemic as she managed to release her debut studio album, Heaven & Hell in 2020. The Black Eyed Peas managed to impact the charts with their Spanglish 8th studio album, Translation. This is the first time the Peas have made chart gain after the permanent departure of Fergie from the group to pursue her solo career.

Other notable tracks – Pussycat Dolls’ comeback single, React; Nathan Evans’ sea shanty turned viral TikTok sensation, Wellerman; Shakira’s sampling of Inner Circle’s Sweat in Me Gusta; Topic’s reworking of ATB’s 9PM as Your Love and Surf Mesa’s ILY, which samples Frank Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.

V.      Top Picks from the Covid-19 Era

The final 30 songs are those that you clearly should be aware of during these trying times. From the fan favorites like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Sam Smith and Katy Perry to the lesser known artists such as Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, Pop Smoke and Ella Henderson, I have included genres for everyone. The final 10 songs I have listed are for anyone who is dealing with the pandemic directly, and to overcome such emotional trauma and to be resilient and courageous. These songs also express about kindness, about how to be calm and that it is okay not to be okay.

So I hope you enjoy this carefully curated quarantine playlist:

2017 Recap: A Year in Music

Attention!!!

Ciao Adios 2017! We were all in love with the shape of 2017 as it gave us some of the best music the industry had to offer. The greatest moments in music were overshadowed by the horrific tragedies which was clearly a sign of the times. But the world moves on another day, another drama and more music. We have a million reasons to love the year but that doesn’t mean we don’t have issues with it, cause you’ve got them too. While we said we won’t let go of 2017, we had to bid farewell. I don't have new rules, so similar to 2016 I will strip 2017 down under seven segments: genres, albums, singles, milestones, shockers, talent and obituaries, and it goes something just like this:

1. Genres
The most conspicuous changes in some of the mainstream genres included:
  • Latin music resurfaced with force in the form of Spanglish remixes and dominated the charts  throughout the year.
  • Mainstream Pop gradually reverted to its original form during the year after facing a tropical take over the year before.
  • Hip Hop and Rap were forces to be reckoned with new artists introducing their own flavours.
  • Dancepop and Electropop were reignited as they seeped through several EDM as well as Pop albums
  • Rock and Country once more took a backseat, with the genres becoming almost irrelevant on the charts.
2. Albums
Some of the most awaited albums were released in 2017:

Shania Twain – Now (5th studio album – first album in 15 years)
Fergie – Double Dutchess (2nd studio album – first album in 11 years)
Steps – Tears on the Dancefloor (5th studio album – first proper album in 17 years)
Linkin Park – One More Light (7th studio album – Bennington's final album)
Zara Larsson – So Good (2nd studio album – first to be internationally released)
Kesha – Rainbow (3rd studio album – first since her legal battle with Dr. Luke)
Pink – Beautiful Trauma (7th studio album – first album in 5 years)
Kendrick Lamar – DAMN. (4th studio album – Year-End No.1 in the US)
Ed Sheeran – ÷ (3rd studio album – Year-End No.1 in the UK)
Taylor Swift – Reputation (6th studio album)
Lorde – Melodrama (2nd studio album)
Jay-Z – 4:44 (13th studio album)
Shakira – El Dorado (11th studio album)
Imagine Dragons – Evolve (3rd studio album)
Lana Del Rey – Lust for Life (5th studio album)
Sam Smith – The Thrill of It All (2nd studio album)
Eminem – Revival (9th studio album)

Most of the anticipated albums in 2018 were debut studio albums:
Dua Lipa – Dua Lipa
Harry Styles – Harry Styles
SZA – Ctrl
The Chainsmokers – Memories…Do Not Open
Khalid – American Teen
Rag ‘n’ Bone Man – Human
Stormzy – Gang Signs & Prayer
Niall Horan – Flicker

Xposition - August, 2017

Attention!!!

The month of August was all about Taylor Swift. Not about the old Taylor though, cause she’s dead. Not much has changed about the new Taylor, except for maybe a haircut. She is still vindictive and self-obsessed as ever. However, now she has clearly embraced all the mud that was slung at her in the past two years. On the heels of winning her sexual assault case against ex-radio DJ David Mueller for groping her at a 2013 concert, Swift blacked out her social media before teasing her fans with GIFs of a snake, which everyone assumed was Kim Kardashian’s reference to her as a snake in the Kanye-Swift Famous debacle.

She next revealed that her newest album would be titled Reputation with its lead single Look What You Made Me Do released soon after. The lyric video itself gained more than 19 million views on YouTube within 24 hours breaking the record of Chainsmokers & Coldplay’s Something Just Like This. The official video premiered at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards where she went on a rampage with her contemptuous references to Calvin Harris, Kanye West, Kim Kardashia, DJ David Mueller, Katy Perry, the mainstream media and concluding the video with scathing remarks at her old self. The official video became the most watched music video within 24 hours with over 43 million views and breaking the record of Psy’s Gentleman which had only 38 million views. (The chart performance of the song will only be available for September).

As said earlier the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards was held this year with less drama than usual. Pink was bestowed with the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award which she accepted after a medley of her hits and concluding with an emotional driven performance of her newest single What About Us. Other great performances of the night included Julia Michael’s Issues, Kendrick Lamar’s medley of DNA and Humble, Logic, Khalid and Alessia Cara’s 1-800-273-8255 and Shawn Mendes’ There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back. Kendrick Lamar who led the nominations with 8 also won the most awards with 6 including Video of the Year and Best Hip Hop Video for Humble. Ed Sheeran won Artist of the Year while Khalid won Best New Artist. The other significant wins of the night included:
·         Best Collaboration: Taylor Swift & Zayn – I don’t wanna live forever
·         Best Pop Video: Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane – Down
·         Best Dance Video: Zedd ft. Alessia Cara – Stay
·         Best Rock Video: Twenty One Pilots – Heavydirtysoul
·         Song of the Summer: Lil Uzi Vert – XO tour llif3

The Teen Choice Awards 2017 were also held in August where Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber received the most nods. Great performances of the night included Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson on a medley of their hits Rockabye and Symphony and French Montana, Swae Lee and Rae Sremmurd on a medley of Unforgettable and Black Beatles. Harry Styles and Ariana Grande won Choice Male and Female Artist respectively while Fifth Harmony won for Choice Music Group. Some other important award recipients were:
·         Choice Country Artist: Carrie Underwood
·         Choice Electronic/Dance Artist: Calvin Harris
·         Choice Latin Artist: CNCO
·         Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Artist: Beyonce
·         Choice Rock Artist: Harry Styles
·         Choice Song Female: Camila Cabello – Crying in the club
·         Choice Song Male: Niall Horan – Slow hands
·         Choice Song Group: Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane – Down
·         Choice Collaboration: Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson – Just hold on
·         Choice Breakout Artist: Chance the Rapper

During the month of August the video of Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber’s Despacito passed Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth’s See You Again as the most watched music video in the world and also passed 3-billion views. It is considered the most viral video of all time reaching this mark within a span of only 8 months. It is also the most liked video on YouTube.

In terms of musical talent, the biggest music content is coming to Asia. The first ever Asia Pacific Eurovision Song Contest was announced as Eurovision Asia was formally launched with 20 countries coming together to compete in an annual grand finale. Another music show called Your Song was announced by Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment to be hosted by Big Brother and The Voice host Emma Willis. The show is for the public to nominate people who think they deserve the performance of a lifetime from their musical hero.

In August, Country music bid farewell to another legend as Glen Campbell passed away at the age of 81, following his long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Campbell will be remembered as one of those rare breeds that brought Country music to the mainstream with a Pop infusion and influenced the artists of today such as Carrie Underwood, Thomas Rhett and even Taylor Swift.

Moving onto chart news, in the US, Despacito ruled the roost accumulating a whopping 14 weeks at the top. Meanwhile, Charlie Puth’s Attention and Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow (Money Moves) all entered the top 10. The world’s apparent greatest songwriter, Ed Sheeran has privately settled a case against him which was lodged last year. In 2016, Sheeran was sued by songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, writers of Matt Cardle's 2011 single Amazing, for USD 20 million for copyright infringement. US judge James Selna confirmed Ed’s case had been dismissed last month after the Suffolk born star reached an agreement with the writers, with no admission of guilt. Details of the settlement have not been made public. Following this saga, his titanic global hit Shape of You also came under fire as critiques alleged plagiarism from TLC’s legendary 90’s smash hit No Scrubs. Since then Sheeran has added both Kandi Burruss and Tameka Cottle who penned the R&B track as co-writers alongside the song's producer Kevin Briggs.

Glastonbury Festival 2017 has announced its full line-up where along with its headlining acts – Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters and Radiohead, a number of other high profile artists such as Lorde, Shaggy, Katy Perry, Clean Bandit, Birdy and Stormzy are to perform. Glastonbury will take place at Worthy Farm, Somerset from June 23-25.

Good news for N-Dubz fans as the Hip-Hop trio have indicated that they will reunite in the near future. Fazer confirmed that the group was anyway only on a hiatus and that he along with Dappy and Tulisa will return to the studio to produce new music. When that will exactly be God only knows.

Moving onto chart news, in the US Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You remained unmoved at the top during the entire month accumulating 12 non-consecutive weeks at No.1. Meanwhile, Drake’s Passionfruit, Kendrick Lamar’s Humble and Harry Style’s debut single Sign of the Times all debuted in the top 10. Future’s Mask Off and Sam Hunt’s Body Like a Back Road also entered the top 10.

In the UK, Sheeran’s reign with Shape of You was only interrupted when Harry Styles debuted atop the charts with his Sign of the Times.  During the month Julia Michaels’ Issues, Zedd & Alessia Cara’s Stay and Kendrick Lamar’s Humble all entered the top 10.
