2017 Recap: A Year in Music

Attention!!!

Ciao Adios 2017! We were all in love with the shape of 2017 as it gave us some of the best music the industry had to offer. The greatest moments in music were overshadowed by the horrific tragedies which was clearly a sign of the times. But the world moves on another day, another drama and more music. We have a million reasons to love the year but that doesn’t mean we don’t have issues with it, cause you’ve got them too. While we said we won’t let go of 2017, we had to bid farewell. I don't have new rules, so similar to 2016 I will strip 2017 down under seven segments: genres, albums, singles, milestones, shockers, talent and obituaries, and it goes something just like this:

1. Genres
The most conspicuous changes in some of the mainstream genres included:
  • Latin music resurfaced with force in the form of Spanglish remixes and dominated the charts  throughout the year.
  • Mainstream Pop gradually reverted to its original form during the year after facing a tropical take over the year before.
  • Hip Hop and Rap were forces to be reckoned with new artists introducing their own flavours.
  • Dancepop and Electropop were reignited as they seeped through several EDM as well as Pop albums
  • Rock and Country once more took a backseat, with the genres becoming almost irrelevant on the charts.
2. Albums
Some of the most awaited albums were released in 2017:

Shania Twain – Now (5th studio album – first album in 15 years)
Fergie – Double Dutchess (2nd studio album – first album in 11 years)

Kesha – Rainbow (3rd studio album – first since her legal battle with Dr. Luke)

Xposition - February, 2017

Attention!!!

It was all about the Grammys in February as the most esteemed awards ceremony in music took place at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California. The 59th Annual Grammy Awards kicked off with Beyonce leading the fray with 9 nominations. However, Adele was the biggest winner of the night grabbing 5 awards including the coveted triple crowns for Song of the Year and Record of the Year for Hello and the Album of the Year for 25. Adele also became the first artist in history to win all three general field awards in the same ceremony twice, previously winning all three categories in 2012. She was followed by David Bowie and Greg Kurstin with four trophies.

The ceremony kicked off with a stellar performance of Hello by Adele followed by other great performances by Ed Sheeran with his global hit Shape of You and Bruno Mars’s That’s What I Like. The ceremony had three tributes wherein Adele sang George Michael’s Fastlove, Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Little Big Town and Andra Day collaborating for a Bee Gees tribute medley, and Bruno Mars and The Time collaborating for a Prince medley. Apart from the awards, we have the jaw-dropping halftime performance by Lady Gaga at the Super Bowl LI. She started off with a mash up of God Bless America and Woody Guthrie’s This Land is Your Land before teasing the audience with the first line of the chorus of her hit Edge of Glory. This leads to a medley of her greatest hits starting off with her biggest hit Poker Face and going on to sing Born This Way, Telephone and Just Dance. She then mellows it down with her latest single Million Reasons for which there was pin drop silence in the stadium. Then she finishes it off with her second biggest hit Bad Romance. With an intense and astutely choreographed production, her performance is now ranked among the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has released the biggest music acts in the world for 2016 and Drake tops the list. Drake achieves this position for the huge success of his fourth album, Views and the multiplatinum hit One Dance featuring WizKid and Kyla. In festival news, Lady Gaga has officially replaced Beyonce as a headliner of Coachella 2017 where the latter was advised by doctors to stay away from the stage due to her pregnancy. It was a no brainer for the organizers of this massive concert to invite Gaga after her acclaimed performance at the Super Bowl. Eminem has been announced as the third headliner for the Reading and Leeds Festival 2017 alongside Muse and Kasabian.

Jay-Z has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and became the first rapper in history to be bestowed with such an honour. Alongside Jay-Z will see Max Martin and the duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis also inducted. Madonna and George Michael were both nominated but did not make the cut.

Moving onto chart news, in the US Migos featuring Lil Uzi Vert’s Bad and Boujee was replaced in the second week by Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You returning to the top backed by his Grammy performance. Meanwhile, The Chainsmokers’ Paris debuted within the Top 10 and Lady Gaga’s Million Reasons soared to No.4 propelled by her performance at the Super Bowl and Alessia Cara’s Scars To Your Beautiful also entered the top 10.

Also during the month Sean Paul featuring Dua Lipa’s No Lie, Dua Lipa’s Be The One, Katy Perry featuring Skip Marley’s Chained to the Rhythm and Taylor Swift & Zayn’s I Don’t Wanna Live Forever entered the top 10.

Most Overrated Hits of 2016

Attention!!!

Overrated means giving something more value than it deserves. In the music industry this is usually the case, if the songs are by popular artists. Sometimes artists such as Adele, Beyonce and Bruno Mars can never get it wrong. While it may just be myself, but the past year there were certain songs that reached hit status when they should not have. EDM took a drastic wrong turn somewhere as now with the Chainsmokers mainstream influence on the genre, it has merged with Pop. The same goes for Dancehall, Reggae and Rock. Purity is lost on the Millennials as one can wonder whether the kids these days actually have any taste in music or whether the music should only cater to “tripping”.

The Most Overrated Hits will become a staple addition to the year-end compilations henceforth as well as the Most Underrated Songs that will follow this post. Lukas Graham’s 7 Years tops this list as I have absolutely no idea whatsoever why this song became a hit. This is followed by The Chainsmokers and Halsey collaboration Closer and Beyonce’s Formation. Rihanna and Drake have two entries each on this list. So here are the 20 most overrated hits of the past year:
  1. Lukas Graham – 7 years
  2. The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey – Closer
  3. Beyonce – Formation
  4. Fifth Harmony ft. Fetty Wap – All in my head (flex)
  5. Rihanna – Needed me
  6. Kent Jones – Don’t mind
  7. Flume ft. Kai – Never be like you
  8. Drake ft. Wizkid & Kyla – One dance
  9. Coldplay – Adventure of a lifetime
  10. Shawn Mendes – Treat you better
  11. Adele – Send my love (to your new lover)
  12. Desiigner – Panda
  13. Meghan Trainor – No
  14. Future ft. The Weeknd – Low life
  15. Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo – Close
  16. Little Mix – Shout out to my ex
  17. Bruno Mars – 24K magic
  18. Rae Sremmurd ft. Gucci Mane – Black Beatles
  19. Drake – Controlla
  20. Rihanna ft. Drake – Work

Xposition - January, 2017

Attention!!!

January kicked off after reeling from the hangover of an awesome 2016. The charts were settling down after the impact of Justin Bieber, Sia, Rihanna, Clean Bandit and of course Drake. Moreover, the buzz was all about the Grammys to be held in February as the heavyweights in the industry as Beyonce and Adele were up against each other for the major grabs.

We start off the year with US President-elect Donald Trump frantically searching for artists and bands to perform at his inauguration. With snubs from the likes of Elton John, Celine Dion, The Beach Boys, Charlotte Church, 2 Chainz and Rebecca Ferguson the final line up of artists included 3 Doors Down, Toby Keith, Tony Orlando, The Piano Guys and Sam Moore. This is definitely a step down from the star-studded inauguration of Barack Obama’s second term which included Alicia Keys, fun., Brad Paisley, Glee Cast, John Legend and Stevie Wonder.

Meanwhile, most of the stars were to be seen at the Women’s March on Washington following the inauguration to advocate policies and laws regarding human rights, racial equality, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, freedom of religion etc. Artists such as Alicia Keys, Cher, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Madonna, John Legend, Rihanna etc. were seen at the march. Meanwhile, following Madonna’s remarks at the march HITS 105 in Texas even went to the extent of banning Madonna’s songs from airplay.

The headlining acts of Coachella 2017 were announced as the annual event takes place for the 18th time in April. Beyonce, Radiohead and Kendrick Lamar have been announced as headliners this year. It will be the third time Radiohead will be headlining while Beyonce will become only the second female headliner since Björk. The full lineup also includes Lorde, Bon Iver, Mac Miller, New Order, DJ Khaled, Schoolboy Q and composer Hans Zimmer.

The 74th Golden Globes were held in January where La La Land outshone all others while sweeping all 7 awards that it was nominated for. Justin Hurwitz won for Best Original Score and the film’s lead single City of Stars penned by Hurwitz and Pasek & Paul and performed by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won Best Original Song.

Meanwhile, edging out competition from Rag N’ Bone Man and Raye, R&B singer Ray BLK won the BBC Music’s Sound of 2017. Alumni of this honour include Adele, Mika, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith and Years & Years.

Little Mix, Skepta and Rihanna lead this year’s 2017 BRIT Awards nominations with three nods apiece. Little Mix who is now the longest reigning girl band with their fourth album Glory Days since the Spice Girls’ Spice with five non-consecutive weeks at the top is nominated for Best British Group, Best British Single for Shout Out To My Ex and Video of the Year for Hair. Skepta who scooped the 2016 Mercury Music Prize for his fourth album Konnichiwa is up for British Male Artist, British Breakthrough Act and Album of the Year. Rihanna has been nominated for International Female as well as for her featured hit Calvin Harris’ This Is What You Came For in both Best British Single and Video of the Year.

Moving onto chart news, in the US Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane’s Black Beatles was replaced by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk’s Starboy after struggling 8 non-consecutive weeks at No.2. However, Black Beatles replaced Starboy in the second week only to be overthrown by Migos featuring Lil Uzi Vert’s Bad and Boujee. In the fourth week, Ed Sheeran’s surprise single Shape of You from his upcoming album ÷ topped the chart, thus leading to four different singles at the top during the month. Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran’s Castle On The Hill debuted at No.6 on the chart.

In the UK, Clean Bandit featuring Anne Marie and Sean Paul’s Rockabye began the year at the top and remained there for two weeks before being replaced by Ed Sheeran’s mammoth hit Shape of You which stayed at the top during the last week. Close behind Shape of You, Sheeran’s Castle On The Hill debuted at No.2 and Zara Larsson’s I Would Like and Jax Jones featuring Raye’s You Don’t Know Me peaked at No.2 and No.3 respectively during the month.

Other songs which became popular during the month were:
  1. Sia - Move your body
  2. The Chainsmokers - Paris
  3. JP Cooper - September song
  4. Starley - Call on me
  5. Snakehips & MØ - Don't leave
  6. Tinie Tempah ft. Tinashe - Text from your ex

December is also the time when the much anticipated year-end charts are revealed. This year Justin Bieber leads the 2016 Billboard Year-End Hot 100 with his mega hit Love Yourself. Adele however rules the Billboard Top Artist as well as the Billboard Year-End 200 with her album 25.  The top 10 are:
1.       Justin Bieber – Love yourself
2.       Justin Bieber – Sorry
3.       Drake ft. Wizkid & Kyla – One dance
4.       Rihanna ft. Drake – Work
5.       Twenty One Pilots – Stressed out

The UK also released their year-end list the Official Top 40 Biggest Songs of 2016 with Drake’s One Dance which broke multiple chart records during the year including staying at the top for 15 weeks and tying for the second longest consecutive stay at No.1. The top 10 are:

The biggest shock of the month was when Camila Cabello from Fifth Harmony left the group to pursue her solo career. In an alleged pre-emptive strike Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane Hansen and Lauren Jauregui informed on twitter that they had been informed by Camila’s representatives that she had decided to leave the group but that they would continue as a foursome. Camila via her twitter account announced that she never meant to leave this way and was unaware of her former bandmates was going to release the statement. As the saga unfolded it was clear that all the signs pointed to Camila’s departure as the pleas of the other four fell on deaf ears as well as her two collaborations as a solo artist with Shawn Mendes and Machine Gun Kelly both becoming big hits.

The X-Factor 2016 crowned Matt Terry as its winner in its 13th edition mentored by Nicole Scherzinger. This year the competition was stiff where Terry beat runner-up Finnish Saara Alto in an explosive finale. However, the winner’s single When Christmas Comes Around was released after the results were announced and was not performed during the competition. The single penned by Ed Sheeran however, failed to grab the top spot in the UK and only managed to peak at No.3.

Speaking of girl bands, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice is to be made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year Honour’s List. Even in its final days 2016 managed to take away another pop star from music and this time its George Michael who passed away from heart failure at the age of 53.

Moving onto chart news, in the US Rae Sremmurd featuring Gucci Mane’s Black Beatles remained at the top during the whole month fueled by the Mannequin Challenge videos that continued to flood social media. Other songs which entered the top 10 include Zayn & Taylor Swift’s I Don’t Wanna Live Forever taken from the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack and J.Cole’s De Javu.

In the UK, Clean Bandit featuring Anne Marie and Sean Paul’s Rockabye reigned supreme during the month and earned the coveted Christmas No.1. Meanwhile, Little Mix’s Touch peaked at No.4, Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson’s Just Hold On and Rag N’ Bone Man’s Human peaked at No.2 during the month.

Greatest Hits of 2016

Attention!!!

2016 belonged to EDM, Dancehall and Reggae Fusion. Justin Bieber began the year at the top of the global charts, but it’s Drake whose mammoth collaboration One Dance with WizKid and Kyla that takes the crown this year as chart performance in most of Europe have already been tallied for Bieber’s Love Yourself for 2015. The smash hit collaboration which brought Dancehall into the mainstream also paved the way for veteran Sean Paul to emerge from the depths of the forgotten 2000s to reignite Reggae Fusion which he succeeded with collaborations with Sia on Cheap Thrills and Clean Bandit on Rockabye.

It was an awesome year for most genres. EDM evolved to a stage where Synthpop and Dancehall was incorporated to form a much mellowed tone than that which the previous years produced such as Progressive House. R&B did not entirely disappear from the mainstream as Rihanna’s newest album Anti produced her global hit Work another collaboration with Drake. Alternative Rock music also entered the mainstream once again in the form of Twenty One Pilots whose album Blurry Face is quite reminiscent of the bygone era of Linkin Park. Pop music took on a more tropical feel to keep up with the increasing popularity of Dancehall and Reggae.

Social media and viral music proved once again to play a massive part in contributing to the mainstream charts. Young stars such as Alessia Cara and Troye Sivan amassed quite a following throughout the year as their hits managed to fare better with social media fame. Viral hits such as Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall’s Juju On That Beat and Rae Sremmurd ft. Gucci Mane’s Black Beatles surged to the top of the charts, the former with its unique dance moves and the latter fueled by the extremely popular Mannequin Challenge which was the next best thing after Donald Trump Memes in the last quarter of the year.

Soundtracks continued to be successful similar to 2015 where Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop The Feeling! from Trolls and almost the entire soundtrack of Suicide Squad particularly Twenty One Pilots’ Heathens faring extremely well on the global charts. We bade adieu to One Direction as the group went on a hiatus in early 2016 and Camila Cabello left Fifth Harmony just two weeks ago which may lead to the end of the girl group which only just received a proper mainstream following.

Artists that Laid the Foundation for the 2010s

Attention!!!

The 2010s have proven to be a smorgasbord of genres as well as producing some great artists who have clearly proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the industry. The 2000s were an awesome decade where Pop and Alternative music flourished uninhibited alongside Rap, Electropop, Dancepop and Hip-Hop music. Eurodance had become virtually non-existent at that time and had paved the way for the more successful Europop and its sub-genre Romanian Pop. However, the trends of the 2000s have come and gone and now that we are 7 years into the 2010s, it is quite conspicuous that it has developed its own unique identity clearly different from any of the preceding decades.

The decade will be known for producing tweaked and synthesized versions of the by-gone genres such as Doo-Wop and Reggae as well as giving rise to modernized genres such as Dancehall, Trap and an all-encompassing Electronic Dance Music, more popularly known as EDM. Sampling old hits is also a trend in the 2010s where only certain artists come up with their original hits and even the great Queen Bey is guilty of sampling Major Lazer’s Pon De Floor in her Run the World (Girls).

Certain artists helped lay the foundation for this decade which has now produced some of the most iconic and successful global smash hits such as Happy, Someone Like You, Uptown Funk, One Dance and Party Rock Anthem. However, there are a set of artists who initially laid the foundation for this decade and then helped mold and shape into what the decade has become. Here are the 10 artists which clearly laid that foundation:

1. Lady Gaga
Mother Monster began her run at fame in 2008 with her debut studio album, The Fame, which produced the titan hits Just Dance and Poker Face. Her second studio album, The Fame Monster, produced the global number one Bad Romance which proved that she was not just a one-album wonder. Her creativity and her unique blend of Art and Pop made her an instant celebrity. The showcasing of her bizarre originality made her extremely influential and the fact that she catered to the growing demand of Pop with significant contributions to Electropop and Dancepop makes her the most prominent pillar of this decade.

2. Pitbull
Mr.Worldwide began his career in 2004, way before his mainstream success kicked off in 2009 with I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho). His style of rapping synced brilliantly with his up-tempo Latin and Electropop beats. He introduced into Dancepop the concept of featuring major artists in his songs, which instantly led them to the top of the charts such as Give Me Everything, International Love and Feel This Moment. He became and is the most wanted artist to be featured in Pop songs during the decade with ongoing collaborations with Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Lopez.

3. David Guetta

Guetta is the father of mainstream House music and the only DJ to be featured on this list. He was in the House scene throughout the 2000s but it was his hit When Love Takes Over that brought him into the mainstream limelight. He is the DJ that began collaborating with the bigtime mainstream artists at the time. He targeted the trends in EDM and adapted accordingly and his albums One Love and Nothing But The Beat are evidence of this, as the former is distinctive of the House music in the latter stages of the 2000s while the latter left a monumental mark in the Progressive House scene with Titanium, Without You and She Wolf.

4. Nicki Minaj
Roman Zolanski, the self-styled Queen of Rap first came into the scene as part of the Young Money crew singing BedRock. Her awesome talent is coupled with a robust personality. This includes different alter egos with varying rapping styles. In the early 2010s she became the most wanted female rapper to be featured (and overall second only to Rihanna). Her mainstream debut as a lead artist proved to be even more successful with Your Love, Super Bass and Starships each one reaching positions in the charts. She revolutionized female rapping and contributed immensely to Dancepop.
5. Bruno Mars
Mars was a breath of fresh air in 2010, as his Pop music was reminiscent of the retro and classic styles of the yesteryears. He brought in elements from Disco, Doo-Wop and retro R&B popular during the 70s and 80s. With flair similar to Michael Jackson and a style similar to Boney-M, pop culture was got a revamped look. Focusing on the genre of Pop as it was back in the day, Mars ensured that his introduction of the bygone elements would be incorporated into the decade as it unfolded.

6. Katy Perry
She started off as a rebel with I Kissed A Girl storming the charts in 2008. Her second studio album Teenage Dream spawned 5 No.1 hits – California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.). Her predominance over the global charts in the early 2010s paved the way for a heavily Pop-influenced decade. She ensured that the pure essence of Pop as it had developed up to that point with its up-tempo, upbeat and light style survived the manipulation of the genre by other artists.

7. Tinie Tempah
He is the Prince of Grime with his own unique style of rapping. His debut single Pass Out was an overnight No.1 hit followed by back to back hits such as Written In The Stars, Wonderman and Frisky. He is the most wanted rapper by EDM artists be it House, Progressive House or Hip House. He has the credit for bringing rapping on EDM songs into the mainstream as his collaboration with Swedish House Mafia on Miami 2 Ibiza became an international hit and proved that it is not only powerful vocals that is needed to accompany EDM.

8. Taylor Swift
Before the reigning Princess of Pop made her strategic genre switch, she was ruling the Country music scene. Her debut studio album Taylor Swift was pure Country while her second album Fearless proved that she was ambitious and was aiming for a much bigger audience. Fearless spawned the hits Love Story and You Belong With Me while her third album Speak Now also produced hits such as Mean, Back to December and Mine. Her dominance over the Country charts encouraged and paved the way for young female musicians to inspire to break into the mainstream from whatever genre.

9. Adele
As the Queen of Soul, she introduced Blues and Soul into mainstream Pop. She proved to the industry that depth can still remain in music while everything else is changing and that slow music still has more than a niche market in the mainstream. She achieved success with her debut studio album 19 in the latter stages of the 2000s. However, with her second album 21 made it a point that Soul is here to stay and will form part of the major genres of the decade. Her hit single Rolling In The Deep in 2010 is one of the best-selling singles of all time breaking multiple records at the time.

10. Flo Rida
He is the King of Hip-Hop especially when it comes to dance music. His 2008 megahit Low made the relatively unknown rapper, instantly famous. His big follow up to Low was Right Round which cemented his presence in the industry. He has shown time and time again that his music is extremely versatile and that his adaptation skills are even better. At the initial stages of the 2010s he too shifted like Pitbull and featured major artists in his songs and then began venturing into Dancepop and EDM to solidify the dance music genre of the decade.

Some may wonder why certain artists missed the top 10. The reason to exclude particular artists is due to the fact that they were extremely popular during the 2000s and were established artists from the early 2000s and more or less had defined their genres by that time. These include artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Shakira, Eminem, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Kanye West and the groups such as Maroon 5, Black Eyed Peas and OneRepublic. Then there are those who had their peak in the 2000s but are still in the industry in the 2010s such as Sean Paul, Jay Sean, Sean Kingston, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Akon.

Then there are the artists who entered the mainstream at the beginning of the decade but never made a significant impact to the genre from the inception like those listed above such as Avicii, Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Drake, Jason Derulo and Justin Bieber. Then we have artists like Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, One Direction, Fifth Harmony and Little Mix who entered the industry too late to make it to the list.

P.S. – One artist who did make a huge impact at the beginning of the decade was Kesha (formerly known as Ke$ha). However, since her legal battle with Dr. Luke she has all but disappeared from the industry and the ones on the list are those who are still in the industry. If she does sort out her issues and do make a comeback (as we all hope) then she will definitely be added on to this compilation (and most probably within the top tier).
