EVANESCENCE ~ Bringing New Life to Celtic Metal ~

Attention!!!

Although my love for music did not begin from Evanescence, as I was fond of the 90s music - Alternative Rock, Pop and Eurodance - the spark was indeed ignited by Bring Me To Life. The haunting melody and the dark lyrics managed to captivate my taste and I became obsessed with their music. I remember their first album released in 2003 "Fallen" by heart. Led by the vocal powerhouse that is Amy Lee, the band achieved monumental success in the 2000s and the band also laid the foundation for many more successful rock bands with a female lead.

1. Going under
Fallen
2. Bring me to life
3. Everybody's fool
4. My immortal
5. Haunted
6. Tourniquet
7. Imaginary
8. Taking over me
9. Hello
10. My last breath
11. Whisper

This album was a monumental success for the band topping the charts in several countries and being certified Platinum by the RIAA. The band received 5 nominations for the album at the 46th Grammy Awards and won for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance.

It is hard to define the genre that the band belongs to for its roots although are in Hard Rock, they tend to incorporate certain aspects of Celtic Metal, Gothic Rock, Symphonic Rock, Alternative Rock and even Soft Metal and Soft Rock. It is probably the most successful rock bands of all time with a female lead, although we can see bands such as Within Temptation and Nightwish making progress in that area.

When success thrives musicians fall apart, and just like this Evanescence too fell apart at the seams with co-founder Ben Moody leaving in 2003 due to "creative differences". Amy Lee stayed and gathered the pieces when three other members of the original band left as well.

But in 2004 a live album titled "Anywhere But Home" was released with another set of awesome songs such as

1. Farther away
2. Missing
3. Breathe No More

and this included the songs from Fallen as well.

Before all of this however Evanescence had done a demo CD title "Origin" in 2000 which had songs such as

Origin
1. Anywhere
2. Field of innocence
3. Where will you go
4. Even in death
5. Away from me
6. Lies
7. Eternal (instrumental)

In 2006 the band released their second album "The Open Door" which although did not achieve the same success as Fallen did manage to capture the No.1 spot on the Billboard 200 and No.2 on the UK Albums Chart.

1. Sweet Sacrifice
The Open Door
2. Call me when you're sober
3. Weight of the World
4. Lithium
5. Cloud Nine
6. Snow White Queen
7. Lacrymosa
8. Like you
9. Lose Control
10. The Only One
11. Your Star
12. All that I'm living for
13. Good enough

These songs were more or less leaning towards Alternative Metal and Gothic Rock. Nor do we see the elements of Symphonic Rock or Celtic Metal in this album other than in Lacrymosa. However this album did manage to get one nomination for the band at the 50th Grammy Awards. Other than Lacrymosa some other good songs are Weight of the world, Sweet Sacrifice and Call me when you're sober, The Only One, All That I'm living for and Cloud Nine.

After this album it took the band nearly five years to return to the scene. Their third studio album was the self-titled Evanescence released in 2011. Although it topped the Billboard 200, the album was the band's least successful. While the band had returned with Celtic Metal elements, it was more rooted in Hard Rock and more dark and dreary than ever.

1. What you want
2. Made of stone
3. The Change
4. My Heart is Broken
5. The Other Side
6. Erase this
7. Lost in paradise
8. Sick
9. End of the dream
10. Oceans
11. Never go back
12. Swimming home
13. A New way to bleed
14. The Last Song I'm wasting on you

Other than What you want and My heart is broken, the other songs in the album lack uniqueness and creativity which may be owing to the lack of the original line-up of the band. Moreover, the rock scene has shifted from being a hard rock oriented one to that of symphonic metal and celtic metal. If Evanescence wants to remain competitive they would have to go up against the likes of Within Temptation and Nightwish for even rock bands such as Nickelback and Linkin Park are slowly losing ground in the charts which used to adore them.

Other great songs by Evanescence which have not appeared in their official albums in no particular order are:

1. Forever gone, forever you
2. Untitled (I must be dreaming)
3. Before the dawn
4. You
5. Forgive me
6. Anything for you
7. Together again

Imaginary by Evanescence remains my go-to song when I need to be either inspired or cheered up. I discovered the band when I was going through a really rough and tough time in my life. Each song of the first album managed to cater to the different emotions I felt at that time. Then of course I went in search of their other songs. From that period onwards I became an ardent music lover and my passion never ends with rock or metal but flows into almost all other genres.
However, Evanescence needs to get its act together in order to survive at this point time. They need to go back to their origins and find out where they went wrong and not who left when. As long as Amy Lee is there which I believe is the heart and soul of the band, they will manage, but to be successful as they were once before, they seriously need to consider making changes to their current style of music and choice of songs.

Therefore it is evident that Evanescence is an awesome band with a great array of unique songs. I obviously recommend their earlier songs, but we will have to wait and see what they will come up with next.

Xposition - June 2013

Attention all, it's time for the Xposition!!!

An exposition in music is the first section of a movement written in sonata form, introducing the melodies and themes. In my blog the Xposition would be the analysis of the charts at the end of the month as well as some exciting news from the music scene.

Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke ft. T.I. and Pharrell held on to No. 1 for quite a number of weeks on both the UK Charts as well as the Billboard Hot 100. The highest entry to the UK Charts is The Other Side by Jason Derulo which I believe hoped for Numero Uno but fell short by couple of hundred singles. No new entrants to the first 50 in the Billboard Hot 100 although a few changes in between.

Dizzee Rascal makes a return to the charts, this time debuting at Number 5 for his song Goin' Crazy featuring Robbie Williams. Andrea Begley won the UK version of the Voice Season 2 but her winning song cover of Sarah Mclachlan's Angel did not even chart although her version of Evanescence's My Immortal debuted at 75. Interesting thing is Leah McFall and Mike Ward who were the Runners-Up both have their singles higher up the charts with their songs Gloria Gaynor's I will survive and Bruno Mars' When I was your man respectively.

Meanwhile Miley Cyrus who is made her return with We Can't Stop has landed the cover of the Billboard magazine. It appears that Miley Cyrus has indeed crept out of her father's shadow and shed the Hannah Montana persona into a more vivacious Rihanna/Ke$ha outfit. Let's hope she doesn't take a plunge like Lindsey or Britney though, and we all know that Billy Ray Cyrus has now filed for divorce from his wife ending a 19 year marriage, which could affect his daughter deeply.

Songs that haven't performed as well as they have expected are:

1. Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull - Live it up
2. Will.I.Am ft. Justin Bieber - #that Power
3. Demi Lovato - Heart Attack

Despite the hype these singles created they have not actually performed as much as the producers expected, though this might be because of Robin Thicke, Daft Punk and Naughty Boy, not to forget Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Pink.

In the Albums Chart news in the UK we have Kanye West with Yeezus which peaked and in the US Black Sabbath after 43 years returns to the top with 13.

Although one would have expected Jennifer Lopez to have gotten a Hollywood Star by now it was only now that she received the honour of a star down the famous Walk of Fame in Hollywood. It is also significant for her as she is the 2500th celebrity to receive it.

Repetitive Revolution

Attention!!

Have you realized that in the recent past that almost all the contemporary dance hits keep on repeating the same damn thing over and over again until you wish you hadn't listened to that song. It has become a trend for these best selling artists to keep on repeating catchy phrases or just the same word or part of the word.

This new revolution started with the simple "Ella, ella, ella". Rihanna's Umbrella marked the beginning of this trend. However, this particular gimmick to repeat was not a new technique as you can see that groups like Boney-M in their Ra-Ra Rasputin and Ma Ma Ma Ma Baker use it. Don't forget ABBA with Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and also Money, Money, Money. And what about Ottawan's hit D.I.S.C.O and Village People's Y.M.C.A. Bee Gees back then came up with Stayin' Alive with its repetitive "Ha, Ha, Ha". Although we don't notice these, this is why these songs are super catchy. For instance that is why LaBelle's Lady Marmalade with its catchy phrase "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?"which was repeated over and over again which means: "Do you want to sleep with me (tonight)?" in French.

Moving onto the 90s scene we have the genre of EURODANCE which caused quite a bit of stir.
  1. Haddaway - What is love
  2. Real McCoy - Another Night, Runaway
  3. Snap - Rhythm is a dancer
  4. Chile - Tic Tic Tac
  5. Mr. President - Coco Jumbo
  6. Vengaboys - We like to party, Boom, Boom Boom, Boom
All these songs with their unique dance rhythms keep on repeating the same words in the chorus which apparently make them memorable or not because most of these artistes ended up being one-hit wonders.

In the late 90s the Pop circuit picked this up and soon most of the artistes started using the technique. Aqua uses this in most of their songs - Barbie Girl, Dr. Jones, My Oh My. The Spice Girls in their Spice Up Your Life and Backstreet Boys in Everybody with its dark undertones attempts to use this technique but fails miserably to get it right (although the two songs back in the day were major hits).

Rappers like Eminem with their Please Stand Up in the Real Slim Shady and Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby repeats the phrases which is somewhat tolerable.

Entering the 21st Century the repetition revolution marked a new beginning. Rihanna uses this in most of her songs - S.O.S., S&M and Pon de Replay. Kylie Minogue even with her Locomotion back then came up with new hits like Can't get you outta my head and W.O.W which we literally couldn't get outta our heads. Just like this Madonna too with her Material Girls back then has used it in Ray of Light and Hung Up.

However, the advent of Dancepop and Electropop during the last few years has certainly seen a significant rise in this repetitive torment which we as music lovers have in turn begun to hate and detest some of the songs as we go along. The mega hits Baby Baby Baby Ooh by Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga's Po-Po-Poker Face are two such examples of how the exploitation is done and even the YouTube viral sensation Rebecca Black with Friday which make us go Partyin Partyin Yeah and Fun, fun, fun, fun. Other than this we have:-
  1. Akon - Lonely, Smack That, Beautiful
  2. Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girl, Me love, Fire burning
  3. Ke$ha - Tik Tok, Blow, Die young
  4. Britney Spears - Gimme More, I Wanna Go
  5. Nicki Minaj - Your love, Girls fall like dominoes, Anaconda, Only
  6. Flo Rida - Low, Right Round, Jump
  7. Taio Cruz - Break your heart, Dirty Picture
  8. Beyonce - Run the world, Single Ladies
  9. Chris Brown - Yeah 3X, Don't wake me up
  10. Jay Sean - Down, Hit the lights, Do you remember
  11. Selena Gomez - Love you like a love song, Round and Round, Come and Get It
  12. Sean Paul - Get busy, Got 2 Luv U
  13. Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow, Imma Be, My Humps
  14. Katy Perry - Fireworks, Peacock
  15. Aura Dione - Geronimo, Friends
  16. Ariana Grande - Problem
  17. Iggy Azalea - Fancy, Beg for it
  18. Ellie Goulding - Burn, Love me like you do
  19. The Weeknd - Can't feel my face
  20. Silento - Watch me
The country scene has not experienced this much but we see this in the contemporary best selling artiste  and everybody's sweetheart Taylor Swift with her I knew you were trouble, trouble, trouble and We are never ever getting back together. Talk about usurping a break-up and repetition.

In the rock scene we hardly get such repetition since these artistes actually try to create music. We do see some repetition in songs like Zombie by The Cranberries and Jaded by Aerosmith. However, repetition has not seriously hampered the quality in that circuit.

Moving to the East we see the J-Pop and K-Pop industries heavily influenced by this technique, since they mostly cater to the dance circuit. We see groups such as Girls' Generation with their Gee, Hoot, Oh! and Boys as well as Super Junior with Sorry, Sorry. Other than this 2ne1, 4Minute and Big Bang have also used the repetitive style in their lyrics.

Thus, we can see that repetitive lyrics are on the rise again to the detriment of quality music. But who are we to complain now, we acknowledged and condoned this revolution with us blindly following the trends and hits that came out without giving much thought to what we were listening but only what we were dancing to. It is a sad day if all songs end up being repetitive to the point of musicians not having to exploit their inner creativity to come up with good lyrics without repeating it up to the point that the listeners become brainwashed. Nevertheless, this is how the trend has been let's see whether it changes or not.

Enter the Major

Major Maestro!!!
Attention!

Major Maestro has entered the scene. This blog was started mostly because I'm stuck in a dreary position of an apprentice and there is no way for me to actually disperse my knowledge of music.

I certainly do not claim to be an expert in music but I do get the sense of what is good and bad and what should set the trend and which musicians should be burnt at the stake.

This blog would go into various genres of music from celtic-metal and hard rock to synthpop and eurodance. This is because I don't discriminate when it comes to music. This is because I don't believe that there is a genre that is considered best. There are good songs and bad songs all around. Sometimes there are good melodies with horrific lyrics and sometimes lyrics which speak to the soul but the melody wants to rip one's ears out.

I research music and everyday I find interesting facts and these make the process of mashing, compiling and mixing fun for those of us who love music. The blog will pay homage to the great bands and artistes as well as crucify those wannabes that have plagued the industry. The trends will be analyzed, the new songs reviewed and the charts scrutinized.

As one of my ongoing hobbies I have been compiling certain lists and these will also be uploaded for your benefit. Listening to a song must always be a journey and at the end of the day one must be able to  reflect on the experience that music provided him/her.
